14286 Kilometers Tale_Chapter 1

14286 kilometers represents the approximate distance from Denison University to the city of my hometown, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. These comic pages represent my analysis and working progress for my summer research. These stories combine the self reflection of my artist journey and literature review for Vietnamese folk tales. By using these folk tales with common lessons yet unique elements, I want to visualize the metaphor in these tales to draw the parallel of my experience growing up in Vietnam in an almost fantastical setting. While working on this project, I was met with an obstacle of not knowing how to introduce the tales to those who may not be familiar with it. As there are many versions of the tales with minute details, the retelling of the tales I have written here are ones I combine and omit enough information that all the essential story details are presented. The imagery used in the comic is the result of observing Vietnamese traditional drawings, architectures to note down unique iconography present throughout Vietnam. As there are many variations with inconsistent iterations, I note down these details and use them as inspiration to my drawing. Overall, this comic is the product of my literature research and my creative progress in reflection to lived experience and Vietnamese folk tales.
